Sea Change Apparent at the Investment Recovery Association Conference 2021
Regardless of industry or niche, I think there is one thing about which we can all agree—the past few years have meant a sea change.
The Requis team attended the Investment Recovery Conference in Alexandria, VA October 18-20, and the sea change was reflected in the flavour of the conference. From 500 booths in pre-COVID times down to 50, thousands of attendees to hundreds, this year’s conference was intimate.
Reconnecting
You’ve got to start somewhere, and that’s what we did at the conference—we restarted. We restarted connections, conversations, and just caught up.
Since we last met, companies have shuttered, strategies have shifted, there have been layoffs, hires, and people’s kids have grown up. We had a chance to touch base with each other and catch up, and it was wholly energizing.
In the current pared-down corporate climate, collaborators and partners become vital. With the Astros winning on the hotel bar TVs, major players in the investment recovery space figured out new ways to work together to better serve our end users. We enjoyed meeting with our clients—that’s always the best part. Dinners and laughter, stories that bond us and add color to video meetings and emails.
Sharing Insights from Our Journey
From a content perspective, the highlight of the Investment Recovery Conference was hearing our CEO, Richard Martin, give the closing keynote speech on the last morning. Coming from an entrepreneurial background in tech, his perspective is fresh and untainted by years watching cyclical fads, in investment recovery and the broader supply chain discussion.
Richard described the journey that Requis has taken—filling a gap in the marketplace since its very inception, through a very strong year of growth in 2020—despite the pandemic. No one looked at their cell phones or left the room as he detailed our most recent press release about the availability of quality carbon credits on the Requis platform, which is a very relevant and timely topic to our current core stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.
I was inspired to see members of the intimate audience taking pictures of his slides as he presented. It is impossible to hear Richard speak without learning from him. Even as attendees were preparing for departure from Alexandria, VA, many took copious notes. I am certain that everyone left understanding carbon neutrality much better, and how each of us plays a part.
To quote Richard Martin, “A few years ago, no one knew what supply chain meant. Now everyone does.” Requis specializes in streamlining supply chains—end to end, cradle to grave (or, ideally, cradle to cradle).
Moving Forward
Five years ago, the Investment Recovery Conference was a huge gathering of a niche industry. This year, it was an intimate gathering of the industry’s experts, discussing issues that aren’t new, but upon which there is currently bright sunlight: the circular economy.
Reuse, reduce recycle—our kids are taught these words in school, and it is that very concept that has bubbled up to top of mind of every supply chain professional. That’s what we do, here at Requis.
